In the 1933 searing social issue melodrama, hard-boiled newspaperman Joe Miller (Ben Lyon) finds himself caught between Julie Kirk (Claudette Colbert), the woman he loves, and her father Eli, a smuggler. The film, fictionalized from Max Miller's classic expose, is a fluid black and white masterpiece directed by James Cruze. A year after starring in I Cover The Waterfront, Colbert achieved superstardom and won an Oscar for her performance opposite Clark Gable in It Happened One Night. In Waterfront, she is first seen skinny-dipping in the moonlight, teasing Miller to the point where he loses his journalistic ethics in a tale with alarmingly contemporary chords.
